All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY This father would like to extend his best wishes to all our fathers. My prayer for you comes from the Baptismal Liturgy: "You, along with your wife, are the first teachers of your children in the ways of faith. May you be the best of teachers!" Amen!

SURVEY RESULTS Last month our Finance Council took a survey of our parishioners. At issue is the concern that the majority of our building fund pledges will come to an end this July. That means that our income will drop by $5,000 per week as we begin making monthly mortgage payments, and the expense of operating our building rises.

The expected budget shortfall will be approximately $170,000. The primary purpose of the survey was to seek your advice on how to handle the expected shortfall. The options included fund raising, increasing stewardship (the Sunday collection), a second fund drive and budget cuts.

The Finance Council met last week, and we discussed the survey at length and began to formulate plans for how we would address the expected shortfall over the next year. After our discussions, I said that I would give you a report on the survey and the direction we are taking.

There were 426 surveys returned. Of these only 13 suggested budget cuts (for 28 it was the second option). So we are not considering any budget cuts in the immediate future. But since support for the other three options was about equal, we addressed our attention to them.

We had already begun work on stewardship and the fund drive. We continue to ask all new members to our community to make a pledge to the building fund. In addition, we have begun contacting those whose original commitment is complete, to consider either increasing their stewardship or renewing their pledge (or making a new one).

The Council will soon begin preparing for our fall stewardship campaign. The hope is to increase awareness and to encourage a greater participation among those who sign commitments. If we are going to begin fund raising, we decided that we would need another group of people to plan and organize fund raising activities. This kind of effort requires a committed group of people to provide leadership. So next weekend, there will be a sign up sheet in the gathering area for those who would like to assume responsibility for fund raising activities.

THE SACRAMENT of PENANCE At the beginning of Lent, I changed the regular time for Penance in hopes that it might provide a more convenient time for people. For 12 weeks, there have been fewer people during this time slot before the 4:30 Liturgy. So I have decided I misread that one.

Beginning next weekend we will return to the original time for Penance: Saturdays from 11:30 to Noon.

CHARITY AND JUSTICE

Food Collection Now that the summer months are upon us, please don't forget the food collection and alms box in the gathering area. People are still hungry; this doesn't go away because the weather is warm. Charity and Justice would like to give you a little background on the recipients of the food and alms donations you contribute each Sunday.

St. Anne's Parish was chosen as a recipient because they are the oldest parish in southern Michigan and we here at St. Mary Magdalen are the youngest. They are located near the old Tiger Stadium and are very close to Mexican Village. Many years ago, Fr. Dave's great-grandfather helped to place the crosses on the two steeples of the church. Our contributions are included in food baskets distributed to the needy, not only at holiday time, but all year round. This is a very needy area in Detroit.

Mary Lou Brown Ministry is located on Third Street, near Forest and the Lodge Expressway. This Ministry began 32 years ago. A parishioner told us of their good works and of their great need for food donations. Mary Lou Brown Ministry serves poor families and street people. No one is turned away, and no one is ever denied food. Our parish was mentioned in their March newsletter because we donated food, paper products and cleaning supplies. This Mission relies solely on donations, there is no government support.

The sign-up sheets are in the gathering space after Masses when required. Please stop by and volunteer to help deliver the gifts to these our brothers in Christ. For Jesus said, "What you do for the least of my brethren, you do also for me."

THREE MINUTES MORE

Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass. This column offers additional information.

THE HISTORY OF THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The second part of the Liturgy of the Eucharist is the Eucharistic Prayer. It begins after the prayer over the gifts and concludes with the Great Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer was not originally a prayer but rather a part of the Gospel. Biblical scholars generally agree that the last chapters of the Gospels of Matthew (chapters 26-28), Mark (chapters 15-16:8) and Luke (chapters 22-24) are the oldest segments of each giving the account of the Last Supper, passion and death and resurrection. These sections were liturgical in origin, having been used every Sunday for the "Breaking of the Bread". This is evident because they include the directions. "During the meal Jesus took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to his disciples saying..." "Then he took a cup, gave thanks and gave it to them saying..." As the presider told the story, he simply did as the words directed.

We are not sure when the Church changed to a prayer form, but it was probably some time after the Gospels were put in a final written form. This transition possibly came out of the narrative itself. When the presider arrived at the place where he said, "Jesus took the bread (and the cup), said the blessing...", the presider stopped the narrative to say the blessing prayer. By the end of the first century, these blessing prayers evolved into a single, longer prayer which we call the Eucharist Prayer. The earliest evidence of a Eucharistic Prayer was written about the year 98.

As the Eucharistic Prayer evolved over the next two hundred years, it was a spontaneous prayer of the presider. Testimony from the second century gives a description of the Eucharistic celebrations of the age and speaks of the presider praying the prayer "giving thanks as best as he is able".

Early in the next century most of this prayer became a fixed formula which was written down and repeated each Sunday. The text continued to undergo various additions until it was edited and given its final form by Pope Gregory the Great (590-604). Called the Roman Canon (Eucharist Prayer I), it had several openings called the preface which varied according to the celebration. The remainder of the prayer was always the same. The Church in the east developed a different tradition. There they had several different versions of the Eucharistic Prayer, in some Churches as many as 200!

In the reforms of 1969, the Roman Liturgy added three additional Eucharistic Prayers. During the time of Pope John Paul II eight more have been approved for our usage.

Every Eucharistic Prayer has three sections and three acclamations. The first section, the preface, gives our specific reasons for giving thanks. This leads to the acclamation: Holy, holy... In the second section we call down the Holy Spirit and then the words of Christ are spoken. The assembly then proclaims its faith with a second acclamation. The third section makes present the saving reality of Christ, prays for others and finally offers the gift of Christ to the Father. The third acclamation, the assembly resounds with Amen!
