ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

SIGNS OF THE TIMES! The sign at the entrance of our property has changed. The larger, brighter, bolder format will now make it easier to find St. Mary Magdalen. Ever since we opened our parish facilities, the sign at the entrance was difficult for people to spot. The sign was designed according to the limits set by the township ordinance. The size and location of the sign made it difficult for people to easily see it from the road. To further complicate the problem the first pastor of this parish chose the color for the lettering — it was a nice color; it blended well (some would say too well) with stone. Moreover, when the stone was wet the letters were almost invisible against the wet stone!

We found out last spring through a chance discussion, that there was a misunderstanding of the ordinance. We could have a bigger and higher sign than we had been led to believe. Hence, a new sign!

The old lettering will be repainted and placed on the building. Hopefully, those who wander up the drive will find it easier to identify the building and to find the offices.

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS for two upcoming events. Directions 2002 is the first event. It will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, September 5 & 6. These are our annual planning days. Every member of our Finance Council and our Ministry Teams is expected to attend.

The Pastoral Council sponsors a Directions session as a means of helping our parish continue to grow in our Vision for this community. The Finance Council and the different Ministry Teams will reflect on their role in our Vision, look at what they are doing and then set their goals for the coming year.

I ask every member of our Finance Council and our Ministry Teams to mark their calendars for this important event.

The second event we all need to mark on our calendars is our Annual Picnic, which will take place on Sunday, September 9. The outdoor Liturgy, the good food and fun are all certainly enough reason for you to plan to participate. But this year we are adding something new to this event.

Our original Vision Statement, which was signed by our founding families, hangs in the Gathering Area. For various reasons, less than half of the original signers are still a part of our community (most have moved away) and many more new people have joined us. Even though every new family signs the Vision Statement when they join us, none of their names appear on the statement in the Gathering Area.

So, we have decided to "retire" the original statement and move it into the office area. Starting with our picnic on Sept 9, we will invite everyone to sign another copy of the Vision, which then will be hung in the Gathering Area.

Our plan is to make this an annual event, a chance for all of us to rededicate ourselves to our Vision for this parish.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

"The harvest is rich," Jesus tells the seventy-two in today’s Gospel, "but the workers are few." The situation is the same today. How can I help with God’s harvest? Am I called into the field? Am I one who could provide food or shelter or wages to those who toil in the fields of the Lord?

Summer Collection: Many people in our community can't afford basic personal care items such as shampoo, toothpaste, soap, brushes and facial tissues. During the month of July we will be collecting these types of items in the Gathering Area. They will be donated to the Salvation Army of Livingston County. Laundry baskets labeled for the "Summer Collection" will be available for any items you are willing to purchase for these people in need. Thank you!

ON THE JOURNEY

During last week’s scripture study one phrase stood out. It was a statement from one of the early church fathers and reads like this: " that which the soul is in the body, the Christians are in the world." It continues to haunt me — as both a beautiful philosophical phrase and a challenge for today. It’s another way of saying that we need to be the spirit of Christ in today’s world.

Our Habitat for Humanity Quilt is in need of quilters to help complete it as soon as possible. It will be raffled off to help raise money for Habitat — as they continue to build affordable housing in Livingston County. If you have a couple of hours to spend quilting, the quilt is in room #4. For more information of this project call Jeanette Martin, 229-5197, or me at 229-8624.

Yours on the Journey, Marilyn

As you read this, the smoke from the fireworks should be all cleared up by now and I should be resting up in Maine - camping with my family! Just because I’m gone, don’t think I have forgotten about all of you out there who are still thinking about if you have what it takes to help out in our Religious Ed/Formation program! We need help in all areas, especially on Sunday mornings. What it takes is someone like you who is willing to share your love of God and your faith with our younger brothers and sisters. Training will be provided and many catechists are teaming up with another to co-teach a class.

I should have the campfires out, the camper cleaned, laundry done and be home to get your calls in the office by Monday, July 16. Don’t hesitate! Call Now! I will return your calls, and time is never limited on this special offer!!

Just a note: 10th grade Confirmation parents should have received a letter outlining the dates needed for the fall as Confirmation is on Saturday, December 8th at our 4:30 Liturgy.

Have a restful week, Mary

This weekend is our 4th annual bottle and can drive. We will be accepting your empties back at the barn after the Masses. Money raised from this event will go toward the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) trip in December and some will go towards the Young Neighbors in Action (YNIA) Chicago trip.

Last week, four of our youth leaders, Ian Rife, Amanda Walters, Andrea Nashar and Devin Willis, participated in the Diocesan Youth Leadership Camp. Throughout the week they learned leadership skills, spent time getting to know God and making new friends. It was a wonderful week for them, and our youth group will benefit from their newly learned skills.

Many of you know I am working from home now. If you would like to contact me I can be reached at 227-7937 or by e-mail at michfab4@tir.com. Please feel free to contact me either way.

M.U.D (6, 7 and 8 graders)

Sign up for the car wash has been low. It is a fun event and I encourage you to participate.

Wednesday July 25, I am holding a meeting for anyone interested in helping with planning events. Bring your planner, the meeting starts at 7:30pm.

INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW:

Over the past several months Livingston County Catholic Social Services has had some success in working with insurance and managed care companies who will reimburse them for outpatient mental health and substance abuse counseling. Among them are Blue Care Network, MCARE, Family Health Plan, BCBS Master Medical, Magellan: State of Michigan, AETNA, PHP Lansing, Cigna Behavioral Health, and Health Plus. Catholic Social Services continues to provide sliding fee scale services to the uninsured. Thanks to the DSA, United Way and the Loaves and Fishes campaign, LCCSS is the only full service sliding fee scale counseling agency in Livingston County.

"Our Lady at the Fair" apostolate: is in need of volunteers to host the booth and exhibit at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. The booth’s purpose is to bring Jesus and Mary to the market place and create more public awareness of their power and promises. The volunteers host the booth and give out rosaries, tapes, medals and other sacramentals free of charge. Last year, "Mary" exhibit distributed over 3000 rosaries, 500 scapulars and many other religious articles. The volunteers commented that the spiritual benefits of volunteering were amazing. To sign up call Mario at (734) 930-3745 or for further inform call Dr. Walter Niemann at (734) 481-0291.
