All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

THE SISTINE WALL Those who use the nursery have already noticed what's going on there, those who don't use it should take a look.

Sue Monroe is an artist who has done several murals on the walls of nurseries in private homes. During the stewardship sign up at Pentecost, Sue mentioned her abilities and asked if she could share her time and talent with the parish as her stewardship commitment.

How could I pass up an offer like that!

So, for the last two weeks, Sue has been transforming the inside wall of the nursery with a mural of Noah's Ark.

It really is quite nice and a wonderful Scripture story to share with the many little ones who use the nursery on weekends and throughout the week. I hope you will take the kids in to see Noah. You can stop in even if you don't have kids!

A SPECIAL DONATION One thing more about the mural in the nursery. While Sue is doing the work, the paint has been purchased through a special donation.

In May, Devon Lintzenich made her First Communion along with several of the children. Early last month, she came to me with a check made out to the parish. She had received some money for her First Communion and she wanted to share some of it with the parish.

Both of these folks make the mural of Noah's Ark very special. It represents a genuine sharing of time, talent and treasure. That makes the mural more than a work of art - its a work of love!

NEED A PRAYER? Just a reminder, the basket for your prayer requests has been placed near the entrance to the Worship area. Our Ministers of Prayer begin their service to our community this week. They will pray for your requests not only during their hour before the Blessed Sacrament in the chapel, but throughout the month.

I would like to thank these folks for their willingness to pray for us all and our individual needs. I truly believe that their prayer with us and for us will be a real grace to this parish!

ON THE JOURNEY

Over the course of this past year several people have told me the difficulty they have experienced in finding the Catechism of the Catholic Church which came out in 1994. It was in the process of being updated and was temporarily out of print. If you are unfamiliar with the Catechism, it is a beautiful text which contains a complete overview of our beliefs, traditions and theology. Its footnotes provide the sources used by the bishops as they compiled each section.

I'm happy to announce that we now have copies for sale in the Adult Formation Room for $7.00 each. If you are a catechist or have a child leaving for college, you may want to consider picking one up; they are a wonderful reference and resource for explaining our faith.
Yours on the journey, Marilyn

The goal is to provide this list as a service to the St. Mary Magdalen community; however, it cannot be considered an endorsement or guarantee of the goods or services. THREE MINUTES MORE

Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass.

This column offers additional information.

THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT As the Eucharistic Prayer continues, with the second part of the prayer, we ask the Father to continue to give us the gift of a Savior by sending the Holy Spirit upon the bread and wine to transform them into the Body and Blood of Christ.

In Luke's Gospel, we read how the angel Gabriel asked Mary to place her life at the service of God. "Do not fear, Mary, you have found favor with God. You shall conceive and bear a son..." When she asked how this could happen, the angel responded, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; hence the holy offspring to be born will be called Son of God." (See Luke 1:26-37.) In the same way, we ask that the Holy Spirit come down or overshadow these gifts of bread and wine.

This calling down of the Holy Spirit, known by its Greek name epiclesis, is a critical element in the Liturgy. For it was the Holy Spirit that overshadowed Mary enabling her to conceive the Lord Jesus. It is the same Spirit that overshadows the bread and wine enabling the Church to conceive the gift of Christ. The presider symbolizes this coming down of the Holy Spirit with the imposition or extension of his hands over the bread and wine.

This descent of the Holy Spirit, together with the words which the Lord Jesus spoke at His Last Supper, brings about a wondrous change. While the bread and wine continue to look the same, the inner reality is different. No longer bread and wine, they have become the Body and Blood of Christ fulfilling the promise of Jesus to give us His flesh to eat and His blood to drink (see John 6:52-56).

Just as Jesus appeared outwardly to be human in every respect, we know that the inner reality was much more than human: He was the very presence of God among us! In a similar way the outer appearance of the bread and wine remains the same, but the inner reality has been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit to become for us the Body and Blood of the risen Christ.

St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) used the word transubstantiation to describe this mystery.
