ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
ISRAEL\PALESTINE
Last month, President Bush gave a long awaited speech on the conflict in the Middle East. Most of the international leaders and press rejected his proposals and, in my opinion, rightly so.I am no supporter of President Arafat and completely reject any attack on innocent people, but he is the freely elected leader of the Palestinian people. His election was as free as the election of Ariel Sharon in Israel.
I have been to the Holy Land four times and listened to many Christians who live and work there (Americans, European and Palestinian). Frequently they compared the tactics of the Israeli government (no matter which party was in power) to those of the apartheid-era South African government. Those tactics have nurtured much of the anger that fuels terrorist attacks and Sharons policies only increase the anger.
It was Sharons visit to Temple Mount (the second holiest Islamic shrine) that sparked the present violence. Sharon has also rejected any previous peace agreements.
In his speech, Mr. Bush allied himself with the position of Sharon. He offered little or no vision to inspire Palestinians, which will only further fuel despair and anger. The end result, in my opinion, makes his efforts to end terrorism incredible. Attacking terrorists, without eradicating the injustice, which often fuels terrorism, is very short sighted. As Pope Paul VI said: "If you want peace, work for justice."
ANOTHER Question my sanity! There is another dog in the rectory. She is a Pomeranian (a three pound, ball of hair) named Tiffany. Also called: Buffy, Muffy, Furball; she is my sisters new dog who loves to sit on her lap and curl up near her on the bed.
So "boys night out" the nightly walk with Roary (my dog) has now gone co-ed!

mmahar@parishmail.com Parish Picnic Its hard to believe its been 9 years since the inception of St. Mary Magdalen. On Sunday September 8, 2002 we will be celebrating our 9th annual parish picnic, beginning with an 11 am outdoor liturgical celebration next to the barn. So mark your calendars, brush up on your favorite recipes and get ready for a day filled with fun, food and fellowship. This years picnic will be focused on more traditional activities like watermelon eating contests, egg and water balloon tossing, horseshoes, volleyball and many more activities with great prizes. In order to make this years picnic a success, we are looking to you for some assistance. If you work for a generous employer or know someone that would be in a position to donate monies or picnic supplies, please fill out the donation form in back of church or call Pat Christie at (810) 229-7557 (home) or (586) 873-0265 (cell). If you are interested in volunteering your time on one of the various sub-committees, please sign-up on the sheets provided in the gathering area.
As we leave for our trip to Kentucky, please keep us in your prayers this week for safe travel, personal safety and for opportunities to touch the lives of people we have never met. We will be back Friday and available next weekend to talk about our experience.
If you are interested in becoming involved with the youth and our youth program here, there is a meeting scheduled for Monday, July 29, at 7:30pm. I am looking to create an adult team of volunteers to help in all aspects of the youth program. Perhaps you are not good in dealing with teens on a personal level. However, you my be helpful with food for special events, or chaperoning trips. Perhaps scrap-booking is your specialty. Putting pictures on poster boards and helping to show off our accomplishments would be a great way to become involved. Creating flyers for special events would be an area you could help with.
Monday August 12 we are planning to spend the day at Cedar Point. Adult chaperones and drivers are needed. This is intended for all students entering the 10th grade through 12th grade.
M.U.D (6, 7 and 8 graders)
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and involved, plan to attend the July 29 mentioned above.

SAINTS FOR THE WEEK
Monday, July 15th, St. Bonaventure, Franciscan Doctor of the Church. Born Giovanno di Fidanza, in 1221, in Bagnorea, Italy. St. Francis of Assisi cured him of an illness and reportedly renamed him Bonaventure. He became a Franciscan in 1238 or 43 and studied in Paris France. Bonaventure taught theology and Scripture in Paris and received his doctorate in Theology alongside St. Thomas Aquinas. In 1260 at a general chapter of the Franciscans he put into operation the constitutions of the Franciscan Order. He was appointed archbishop of York, England but refused the honor. In 1271, he aided Pope Gregory X in the papal election and was made the archbishop-cardinal of Albano, Italy, two years later. According to tradition, Bonaventure was washing dishes when the papal representatives arrived to inform him of his elevation. Rather than soil the red hat of the cardinalate with his dirty hands, he asked the representatives to hang the hat upon a nearby tree branch. He was asked by the pope to draw up the agenda for the fourteenth General Council at Lyons, France. One of his closest friends was St. Thomas Aquinas, although he had a number of disagreements with the Angelic Doctor on matters of Aristotelian thought. Called "the Seraphic Doctor", Bonaventure is considered one of the great intellects of his era. He is remembered for a number of treatises and theological tracts, and is revered for his spiritual writings. He wrote five hundred sermons and the biography of St. Francis of Assisi. He was canonized in 1482 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1588.
Tuesday, July 16, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The scriptures speak of the beauty of Mount Carmel in Galilee where the prophet Elijah defended the faith of Israel in the living God. There, at the beginning of the 13th century, under the title of "St. Mary of Mount Carmel," the Order of Carmelites had its formal beginning. Legend tells how in the thirteenth century the Carmelite St. Simon Stock asked Mary to grant a special privilege to his order. And so it happened that on a certain day the Blessed Virgin appeared to him with a brown scapular in her hand saying, "Here is the privilege I grant to you and to all children of Carmel. Whoever dies clothed in this habit shall be saved." This is the traditional prayer of Our Lady of Mount Carmel:
O beautiful Flower of Carmel, most fruitful vine and splendor of heaven, O holy and singular one who brought forth the only Son of God while remaining still a pure virgin, watch over us this night. O Star of the Sea, O Mother of Christ, show us you are our mother, too.
