All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

WELCOME, MARGARET! For the last few years, Margaret and Tom Callaghan have served as youth ministers in our parish. While the parish did provide a small stipend to help cover any of their expenses, it was essentially a volunteer position. But as of the first of July, Margaret is now a member of our parish staff.

In a real way, Margaret's becoming a member of the staff is due to the success of our youth programs. Among our high school youth, there is a real enthusiasm and a growing sense of community. If we want to help this continue to grow, then we as a parish need to make a commitment to provide adult guidance.

In her new pastoral role, Margaret will work with other interested adults to help provide this guidance. She will also encourage our young leaders to continue to develop their talents.

The other aspect of her pastoral role is to work with our junior high youth. This critical time in adolescence is a real concern to many in our community. Both our Pastoral Council and the Religious Formation team have discussed this concern on several occasions. While some efforts to develop an outreach to this age group have been made, we decided that a successful effort requires the guidance of pastoral staff person.

So Margaret will be working with both groups of young people: our middle school and high school youth. But like every other pastoral role in community, she will need the help of others who would like to work with young people.

I hope you will join me in "welcoming" Margaret to her expanded role. If you would like to work with Margaret and Tom in this ministry, just give her a call.

Like the other staff, her office is in the east wing with the rest of us! THE CARDINAL Just about the time Fr. Jerry was ordained a priest and left St. Mary Magdalen, another took up residence at the rectory.

A cardinal - of the female persuasion - built a nest in the hanging basket near the front door and promptly laid three eggs!

So while I await the "blessed event", I have stopped watering the impatiens that filled the basket. The flowers will be lost, but hopefully the parish (not the Church) will gain three new cardinals!

ON THE JOURNEY

Shortly after Jerry became Catholic in 1987, he and I went on a Marriage Encounter Weekend. I think he did it primarily for me; but as the weekend progressed, it became increasingly more important to both of us. It gave us an opportunity to explore and discuss various aspects of our married life that time and children had put on the back burner. Our marriage took on a new life; and even more significantly, it recentered our lives around Christ, making Him the third player in our relationship.

For many of us a weekend away is very difficult to pull off, and because of that we have invited Allen Theis, B.C.D., to spend an afternoon with us on Sunday, October 24. He is an experienced marriage counselor with a masters degree in theology and offers a 5 hour seminar to married couples that concludes with a recommitment of their marriage vows. Please reserve October 24 for what promises to be a very worthwhile workshop.
Yours on the journey, Marilyn

NURSERY

Many Thanks to all our 1998/99 Nursery Attendants for your help these past several months. Your participation has made it possible for many parents to attend Mass together in peace, without worry. Please call me if you have any concerns. Copies of the schedule are in The Visionary each month, or a few copies of the entire schedule are under the "supply" box in the nursery. The new schedule will run from January, 2000 through September. We still need adult volunteers. Please call me (810) 227-6357 if you can help us out.

We are still looking into the pager system that Evelyn Dionise researched for us. The poll of nursery users and attendants has not been completed.

Needed for the nursery a portable infant bed! Since the nursery is mainly for toddlers, this item is not always in demand. Occasionally, however, our nursery attendant has a sleeping infant to take care of while "on duty" and a crib is needed at that time. If you have one of these beds available, we can come up with the bedding and the storage bag.

YOUTH NEWS

There is a meeting tonight at our regular 7:30pm time. Our leadership campers will be continuing their presentation with skits and activities that will have us on our feet!

Early next Sunday morning, David Deater, Natalie Peplinski and I will be traveling with St. Pat's to Chicago to participate in a week long work camp. We will be working with young adults and teens who are physically and mentally handicapped. It will be a very challenging and emotional week for all of us who are going. I thank you in advance for keeping us in your prayers. I am looking forward to this experience and am especially excited to be able to offer this opportunity next year to our teens here at St. Mary Magdalen.

We've secured two dates to volunteer time at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. We need teens and adults to sign up. The first date is August 9 from 10:30am to 1:30pm. We will be serving lunch. The second date is November 12 from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Anyone interested, please call the parish offices. More dates and times can easily be acquired if needed.

JST. MARY MAGDALEN BUSINESS DIRECTORY

Have you ever had an appliance break down and wondered who would give you a fair deal on a replacement; or decided to remodel or add additional space to your existing home; or even considered purchasing a new home, and didn't know anyone who could help? Maybe you needed help with your income taxes or estate planning, or wanted to take yoga, dance, tutoring or singing lessons. If so, a directory of goods and services that includes only your fellow parishioners, might be a good first step!

If you would like to advertise your goods or services in a Free parish business directory, just complete a form titled, "Business Directory Information" located in the gathering space, and leave it on the table or turn it in to the parish office.

The goal is to provide this list as a service to the St. Mary Magdalen community; however, it cannot be considered an endorsement or guarantee of the goods or services. If you have any questions or concerns contact Jim Chevalier (810) 229-9734.

THREE MINUTES MORE

Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass. This column offers additional information. THE CONSECRATION The consecration or words of institution are essential to every Eucharistic Prayer. In the long liturgical tradition of both the eastern and western Church, there are more than eighty liturgical versions of the words of consecration. While faithful to the Gospel accounts, none strove for Scriptural exactitude, for even the Gospels themselves vary slightly. Instead, we believe it is fidelity to the meaning of Jesus' words (not the exact words) and the work of the Holy Spirit that transform the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.

For centuries, the high elevation of the Sacred Species and the ringing of bells were closely associated with the consecration. This happened for three reasons. First, both the presider and assembly began to face the altar in the same direction (usually east) and the congregation could no longer see the Body and Blood unless they were held high. Secondly, the Medieval Church struggled against those who denied both the divinity of Christ and the sacred character of the Holy Eucharist. The reaction was to emphasize the sacred by moving sanctuaries where the altar stood farther away from the assembly and frequently enclosed them with a special screen. (In the west it was called the rood screen and in the east an iconostasis.) Furthermore, the Eucharistic Prayer was no longer proclaimed aloud but spoken in hushed, sacred tones. So bells became necessary to alert the assembly to what was happening. Lastly, people did not receive communion frequently, so the elevation of the Eucharist and the ringing of bells called the assembly to adoration and a "spiritual communion" with the Lord rather than a physical communion.

Since the reformation of the Liturgy in 1969, the bells and high elevation are no longer necessary. The assembly can now clearly see and hear all of this sacred prayer. Moreover, the high elevation is now reserved for the end of the prayer when the Son offers Himself to the Father. Our prayer is that we be accepted by the Father along with the Son.
