THANKS I want to thank Fr. Matt for celebrating the Liturgies this weekend and I want to thank you for your generosity to the missions of the Servants of Charity. Please feel free to use their special envelope to make a contribution. Just place it in the collection next weekend, and we will make sure that your gift is forwarded to them.
THE TEST Every now and then, like a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned preparing an exam. It's a humorous comment that I've made over the years. Those who are regulars at the weekday Liturgies have heard me make the comment. It usually comes after I have mentioned some historical tidbit, which I then follow up by saying that "will or will not" be on the test.
The value of exams is that they provide a means of ascertaining how much has been learned. For that reason, I sometimes wonder if putting together some kind of test wouldn't be helpful to me. Over the last several months I have taken a few minutes before the Liturgy to explain an aspect of it and written about it here in the bulletin as well. Sometimes I wonder if what I say is understandable and, even more, beneficial.
The thought of preparing a "test" is tempting, but I suspect it will just remain an idle threat --- at least for a while longer...
DIRECTION 2000 If you serve on a council or a ministry team, I would again urge you to sign up for Direction 2000. Because it will set the direction of our community for the coming year and beyond, we need the insight of those who are the ones to be responsible for "making things happen".
I realize the date scheduled for Direction 2000 may prove to be inconvenient for some, but I hope you will try to make it if at all possible. Originally we thought the event would take place just before school began. It was only later we found out that, after years of starting before Labor Day, our two school systems decided to postpone the starting date to after the holiday.
VACATION I am still off on vacation, visiting a cousin in Northern California. I will be back in time for next weekend.
Fr. Dave Howell
If you would like to have a Liturgy celebrated for a special intention, arrangements can be made by calling Kay at the office. A contribution is usually made to pay for the cost of the bread and wine and all the other items that are needed for the celebration of the Liturgy.

Needed, a few good men and women to accompany our candidates and catechumens on their journeys of faith. If you are intimidated at the thought of sharing your religion with another adult, don't be. It isn't as scary as it sounds! The catechists and RCIA team are there to answer any heavy duty questions; our sponsors share what living out the Catholic faith in their lives means to them. Please give some thought to sponsoring. We meet every Tuesday evening, with sponsor formation beginning this month.
Scripture and Stitches Update We have begun another quilt for Habitat for Humanity. If you are interested in making a block, please contact me for a kit. If you would like to advertise your goods or services in a Free parish business directory, just complete a form titled, "Business Directory Information" located in the gathering space, and leave it on the table or turn it in to the parish office. The goal is to provide this list as a service to the St. Mary Magdalen community; however, it cannot be considered an endorsement or guarantee of the goods or services. Any questions, please contact Jim Chevalier (810) 229-9734.
There are many children who are not registered for religious education next year. Please drop in and fill out the forms. Still needed are catechists, aides and people to help in the program.
Schedule for next year: Kindergarten during the 11am liturgy, Grades 1-6 from 9:30-10:45am on Sunday, and Grades 1-8 on Wednesday and Thursday 6:30-7:45pm. The ninth and tenth grades meet Sunday evening from 5:45-7:00pm.
Journey with Jesus What a wonderful week! The children learned,
shared and reflected on the scriptures and had fun. One of the nicest things that happened was that the children collected pennies all week for Carolyn Jandasek's son (Keith Dunn) who needs a bone marrow transplant; and with all the pennies, we gave her a check for $431.00! All who came left with wonderful memories! Next year's journey will be even more awesome. It is planned the first week of August; so maybe we could do vacations in July!
Sister Maryetta
Please note on your calendars that there is NO meeting tonight. There is, however, one next week and one on August 29.
Our youth prayer breakfast is still going quite well. We will be gathering together one last time this Tuesday to just be together. You are free to join us, if you wish, from 9:45 to 11:15am in the basement of the rectory.
Well despite the rain last weekend, our camping/canoeing trip went well. Everyone had a good time. I would like to thank the Deater's, Ron Huston, Jim and Kathy Rigley, and Dave & Janice Francis' who came and spent their weekend with us. It would not have been a success without you. It was quite a fun weekend!
Last Monday we went to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit and helped serve the poor and less fortunate. It was quite an experience for all those who went, seeing families of all sizes and ages come in for food. The kitchen facility is just over a year old and is very nice. The people are provided for totally by private donations and money raised at fundraisers. It's amazing what can be done when we place our trust in God.
Please take a moment to look at the pictures I have put together regarding our Young Neighbors in Action trip and our camping trip. I must tell you that due to the nature of the people we worked with in Chicago, there are no pictures of us working with them. We did work all day and played and prayed in evening, which is what you see us doing. We had a good time! It was all time well spent.
Next weekend on Sunday, Aug. 22, is the walk that Kimber Kunkel and Maggie Pence have
organized to raise money for Autism. The walk will be held at Kensington Park and begins at 1pm. Come and show your support. If you would like to donate money but cannot attend the walk, make the check payable to the Autism Society of Michigan and drop it off in the offices to the attention to Margaret Callaghan.

Aug. 20 feast of St. Bernard, abbot, doctor of the church. Born in 1090 at Burgundy, France, of a noble family, he entered the abbey at Citeaux at the age of 23. Perhaps the most unenclosed monastic ever, Bernard was the dominant personality of the twelfth century. He was commissioned by Pope Eugene III to preach the second Crusade. In addition he founded numerous Abbeys, from Spain to Syria and from Sicily to Sweden. He was also employed frequently as a peacemaker and venerated as much for his doctrine and interior life as for his numerous miracles. Besides his writings of theology and spirituality, the church still enjoys Bernard's hymns, among them "O Sacred Head surrounded".
Aug. 21, feast of Pius X, pope. Pius X died in 1914 and was canonized in 1954. He was elected pope in 1903 much against his wishes. His pontificate was extremely fruitful. The liturgical reforms were: the Breviary, the Mass, Gregorian chant, reception of Communion and a more active participation of the faithful in the liturgy. Because of his pastoral work we should note his Catechism, his preaching every Sunday, the Code of Canon Law, and the reform of the Roman Curia, and the laws governing marriage and regulations concerning the study and the formation of the clergy.

THE DOXOLOGY and GREAT AMEN The last consistent part of every Eucharistic Prayer is the conclusion known as the Doxology (from the Greek, meaning: the giving of glory). This prayer: "Through Him (Christ), with Him..." is the final giving of glory and thanks to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
In the ancient papal Liturgies, the deacon raised the cup while the pope placed his hand on it. The reason was that the cup was very large, holding enough for the entire assembly of several thousand.
We know from the writings of Justin the martyr (second century) that "when the prayer of thanksgiving ended, all the people present give their assent with an Amen." In this Great Amen, the people acclaim the Eucharist and voice their assent to the prayer which the presider prayed at their request ("May the Lord accept this sacrifice..."). This third acclamation of the Eucharistic Prayer is a Hebrew word meaning "so it is".
Liturgical customs of the Middle Ages transformed the major elevation of the ancient Roman Liturgy into what was called the minor elevation. The reason was the addition of the sign of the cross which the presider made five times over the Body and Blood during the doxology in memory of the five wounds of Christ. Then he would genuflect and raise the Eucharist for the final phrase of the doxology, "forever and ever." The reforms of Paul VI restored the ancient Roman formula.
There is a nationwide ministry available to traveling Catholics providing free information on the location of the nearest church and times of Masses on weekends and holy days. This service is available to all parishes by calling 1-800-627-7846 or checking the internet at www.masstimes.org.
