All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

JUST A WORD OF THANKS to all those who cut and trim our grass and pull the weeds among our shrubs and flower beds. Your efforts contribute to the parish in more ways than one. Visitors frequently remark on the good maintenance of our property and with some pride it is pointed out that it is all done by volunteers. Moreover, your efforts bring a considerable savings to the parish. The cost of contracting outsiders to do all the cutting and trimming was estimated at almost $10,000 a year. Your efforts are greatly appreciated!

A NEW COLUMN is making a weekly appearance in the bulletin: A LOOK AT THE CALENDAR. Each week there are special Liturgical feasts and celebrations that are only appreciated by those who participate in the weekday Liturgies.

So our deacon, Dave Scharf, will begin writing a weekly column to explain not only something about the celebrations, but also tell you of the customs that often are associated with it.

WHERE ARE WE GROWING?? Even before we began construction on our Spiritual Home, members of our Pastoral Council expressed some concern about how future growth would affect our community. While growth is inevitable, our desire is to integrate new people in a way that will strengthen the best aspects of our parish life.

Two things resulted from those concerns. One is the New Parishioner Meeting which invites people to become involved even as it introduces our newcomers to the parish.

The second is Directions 2000. It is a six hour gathering of all members of our councils and ministry teams. The purpose of the gathering is to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses as a parish and to set the direction for the coming year and beyond. Directions 2000 will take place Friday, Aug. 27 (7 pm - 9:30) and Saturday, Aug. 28 (9 am - 12:30). A sign up sheet is in the Gathering Space for participants to register for Directions 2000. I hope that as many as possible, especially those who serve on Councils and ministry teams, will make plans to be a part of it.
Fr. Dave Howell

YOUTH NEWS

Please take a moment to look at the pictures on the bulletin board that I have put together of our Young Neighbors in Action trip, our camping trip and other summer activities.

Our youth prayer breakfast has come to an end. Thank you to everyone who participated. It was very fulfilling for all those who came, and it was nice getting to know everyone. I would like to thank Kathy Rigley for her time and talent these past six weeks. She will be offering another Bible study during Advent.

For our NCYC participants and parents, you should be expecting a letter in the mail from me regarding the final payments. Please read the information and call me with any questions.

In the course of my reading through a popular youth magazine, I came across some words of wisdom. I thought you might enjoy reading some of it today and in upcoming bulletins. The first of a few to come is this: "Don't compare yourself to others or set your goals by what others deem important." Just be yourself because that is exactly how God made you to be. Be proud of who you are!

AUTISM WALK This afternoon is the walk Kimber Kunkel and Maggie Pence have organized to raise money for Autism. The walk will be held at Kensington Park and begins at 1pm at the West Boat Launch. Come and show your support! If you would like to donate money but cannot attend the walk, make the check payable to the Autism Society of Michigan and drop it off in the parish offices to the attention of Margaret Callaghan.

Please note on your calendars that there is a meeting tonight at 7:00pm until 8:30pm.
Margaret Callaghan

Our next Jr. High event is a dance scheduled for Saturday, September 25, from 7-9pm. If you are interested in helping to plan for this event, there will be a planning meeting on Wednesday, August 25, at 7:30pm. These Jr. High events are planned for students in Grades 6, 7 and 8. I am planning to have an activity at least once a month.

A LOOK AT THE CALENDAR

Aug. 24 feast of St. Bartholomew, apostle. One of the 12 apostles mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles and is believed to be the Nathanael mentioned in John. He is credited with missionary labors in India and Armenia. Tradition says local Armenian officials condemned him, and he was flayed and beheaded. It is also believed that he preached in Mesopotamia, Persia, and Egypt. He is patron of Armenia, and other cities. He is also patron of bakers, bookbinders, butchers, glove makers, leather workers, millers, miners, shoemakers, shepherds, tailors, tanners and wine growers.

Aug. 27, feast of St. Monica, married woman. Monica was the widowed mother of St. Augustine of Hippo, born in Tagaste, North Africa. After 30 years of prayer, she obtained the conversion of her pagan husband. In Milan, under the guidance of St. Ambrose, she saw her son, Augustine, and her grandson baptized. She is the patroness of married women and a model for Christian mothers.

Aug. 28, feast of St Augustine, bishop, doctor of the Church. One of the four great doctors of the Latin Church; called the "Doctor of grace." Augustine was born in North Africa; after a wild life he received baptism at the age of 33 from St. Ambrose. He was elected Bishop of Hippo at 42. He combated the Manichee, the Donatists and the Pelagius heresies of his time. He is most noted for his writings; "Confessions" and the "City of God." He is considered the founder of monastic life in the West, his Rule is observed by some 150 religious communities today. He is the patron of the Augustinians, theologians, and the city of Carthage.

THREE MINUTES MORE

Before each weekend Liturgy begins, there is a three minute explanation of a segment of the Mass.

This column offers additional information.

THE COMMUNION RITE The third division of the Liturgy of the Eucharist is the Communion Rite. It is divided into four parts: the Our Father, the Greeting of Peace and preparation for and reception of Communion.

In the first decades of the Church, the reception of Communion immediately followed each consecration. But before the end of the first century, the development of the Eucharistic Prayer necessitated moving the reception of Communion to the end. With no Jewish ritual to guide us, the Communion Rite took various forms over the last 1900 years. In the earliest celebrations, there was no fixed formula after the Eucharistic Prayer. The single loaf of bread that had become Body was broken for distribution. Depending on the size of the congregation, the Blood was poured from a larger cup into smaller cups for distribution. The assembly simply came forward and received the Body and Blood; and after everyone had received and others had been sent out to bring the Eucharist to the sick and imprisoned, the congregation was dismissed.

By the third century, something was said to each communicant, and each responded before receiving. The actual formula has changed several times over the years. By the fourth century, the Our Father and the Prayer after Communion were added to the rite; and by the sixth century, the procession to the altar was accompanied by the singing of a psalm.
