ALL THINGS CONSIDERED
WELCOME SR. MEG!!
Next weekend, Sr. Meg, a member of the Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, will be joining us at all the Liturgies to share with us the good news of the missionary will done by members of her community. As you might expect, she will also be asking us to help support their missionary efforts (special envelopes will be available). This is our annual mission co-op appeal. Each year several groups active in the Catholic missionary effort, both here and abroad, ask our bishop for support. Many of these groups are assigned to make an appeal in one or two parishes in the diocese. All the funds raised from these appeals go to the diocese. Approximately 90% of what we give as a result of Sr. Megs appeal will go to the mission fund of the Sinsinawa Dominicans (of Sinsinawa Wisconsin). The rest will go into a "common pot" to be divided up among the different groups that were unable to make an parish appeal.
I mention this to you, because even though the envelopes have the address of the Sinsinawa Dominicans on it, I would ask you to return the envelope to St. MM any checks should also be made out to St. MM. We send the money on to the diocesan mission co-op.
Thank you for your cooperation and your generosity which has always been magnificent!
HOW MANY DOMINICANS ARE THERE??
Last weekend, I mentioned that Sr. Barbara Reid, OP, is the daughter of our parishioner, Christine Reid (thus, by extension, a member of our parish or so we claim!!) Sr. Barb is a doctor of Sacred Scripture and a professor in Chicago. She is also a Grand Rapids Dominican.Sr. Maryetta, OP, is an Adrian Dominican. There are also Oxford Dominicans. To find out how many different communities of Dominican Sisters there are, you would have to ask Sr. Maryetta our resident expert. All of these different communities are known by the same initials: OP. Long before these initials stood for a popular line of clothing, they stood for something more important: Order of Preachers!
I hope you will welcome Sr. Meg when she comes to preach to us about the missions.
THE PRAYER
In last weeks homily, I prayed The Prayer for the Dead, attributed to St. Bede (673-735). A few folks have asked for a copy; so assuming that others might appreciate it too, here it is:We seem to give them back to you, O Lord, you who first gave them to us. Yet, as you never lost them in the giving, neither do we lose them by their return to you, if we belong to you as well.
For life is eternal and love is immortal. Death is only a horizon and a horizon is nothing but the limit of our sight.
Lift us up, O strong Son of God, that we might see farther; cleanse our eyes that we might see more clearly; and draw us closer to yourself so that we might be closer to those we love.
While you prepare a place for them, prepare us for that place as well, so that, where they are, we might also be one day in you! We ask this through Christ, our Lord!
Fr. Dave Howell
