All Things Considered

by Fr. Dave Howell

MANY THANKS to all those who were a part of Journey with Jesus this past week. I want to especially thank Sr. Maryetta and Peggy Weingartz who undertook the months of planning as well as all the adults and young people who worked to make it so successful.

If enjoyment is success, then from the reaction of the over 200 kids who participated, the many, many folks who worked on JwJ were terrific! DIRECTIONS 2000 On Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28, there will be a gathering of all those who serve our community on Councils and the various ministry teams. The purpose of the gathering is to chart the course of our parish for the coming year and beyond.

When I sent letters to all the different folks involved in these groups to invite them, I called it Directions '99. But the reality is, our efforts will not just shape the efforts of the last four months of this year, they will affect how we live and operate into the next millennium.

In all honesty, I am excited about Directions 2000. It gives us the opportunity to bring together the collective wisdom, experience and energy of many responsible people. By reflecting on our Vision and what has been done to make it a greater reality here, we be able to see what needs more work and then plan effectively for that.

A sign up sheet is in the Gathering Space for participants to register for Directions 2000. I hope that as many as possible, especially those who serve on Councils and ministry teams, will make plans to be a part of it. VACATION This Sunday I will be leaving to visit some friends and family. My plans include visiting my cousin in San Jose, California and my sister and her family in Cleveland -- plus a little sight-seeing along the way.

Next weekend, Fr. Matt Weber from St. Louis Home in Chelsea will be presiding at the Liturgies. Fr. Matt belongs to an order of religious priests known as the Servants of Charity. Their special ministry is to run homes for mentally and physically disabled boys, enabling them to achieve their full potential in a faith-filled environment.

One of our special parishioners, Joel, is a student at St. Louis Home.

Fr. Matt will be asking for your financial support for those homes which his community operates in underdeveloped countries. I know that you will welcome both him and his request.
Fr. Dave Howell

ON THE JOURNEY

My column this weekend appears to have several branches; but I'm writing this very rested and relaxed after a beautiful vacation in Charlevoix.

We are still in need of sponsors to accompany our candidates and catechumens on their journeys of faith. If you are intimidated at the thought of sharing your religion with another adult, don't be! It isn't as scary as it sounds. The catechists and RCIA team are there to answer any heavy duty questions; our sponsors share what living out the Catholic faith in their lives means to them. Please give some thought to sponsoring; we meet every Tuesday evening, with sponsor formation beginning this month. If you have any questions please give me a call.

Secondly, we are in need of forming a Kitchen Committee to oversee the upkeep of our kitchen. With many different groups using the facility, we need to arrive at some standard policies, procedures and places for locating our equipment. If your group normally uses the kitchen, please call me so we can begin organizing.

I hope you're having a peaceful summer and have found time to "smell the roses" at least a few of them. As ever,
Yours on the journey, Marilyn

YOUTH NEWS

Please note on your calendars that there are no meetings for the next two weeks. We have enjoyed seeing all the new faces this summer and are thrilled to have you involved. Our next meeting is Sun., Aug. 22, at 7pm.

The following was written by David Deater regarding our trip to Chicago:
"Last week I had the wonderful chance to go to Young Neighbors in Action in the great city of Chicago. I was lucky enough to meet people from a variety of places, including Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin, Rochester MI. With all these people Young Neighbors was able to help a variety of organizations, including Misericordia and New Horizons, both of which work with mentally challenged people; Genesis House, which works with women trying to start a clean new life; and Chicago Christian Industrial League, which helps homeless men. Natalie, Margaret and I personally worked at Misericordia.

One thing that surprised me was how much some of these people could do by themselves. There were even a few residents who were able to leave Misericordia to work as janitorial staff at the nearby hospital. The biggest thing I learned on the trip was that before I left, I thought I would be baby-sitting them for the week, that I would have to help them with whatever they did. Well, it didn't turn out that way at all! I learned so much from them; but what I learned the most was that these people can contribute to society and they are NOT helpless but intelligent and resourceful human beings. If society would accept them, they could be your neighbor or even your best friend!"

Our youth prayer breakfast is going quite well. Please feel free to join us on any Tuesday until August 17. Any teen of any age is welcome. Bring a friend from 9:45 to 11:15am in the basement of the rectory.

Mark your calendar for August 22. Kimber Kunkel and Maggie Pence have organized a walk to raise money and awareness for Autism. The walk will be held at Kensington Park and begins at 1pm. Come and show your support.

JUNIOR HIGH NEWS

A CHALLENGE for YOU from ME!

This being our parish, this challenge goes out to every member and/or family members of St. Mary Magdalen. You are challenged during the next six weeks: bring a brown grocery bag on one day (the day of your choice). Stuff the bag full of debris by pulling weeds from anywhere on the property, giving the "Willow" trees a haircut, trimming shrubbery as needed, mowing or trimming the berms, around the pond fence line, or around the church building, barn, stable, rectory or duplex. Stuff the bag "full" and dispose of it in the dumpster.

If each family will accept this challenge, our parish grounds will be in top-notch shape for our annual outdoor Mass and picnic on Sun., Sept. 12, 1999.

In addition, the person who brings to the picnic the longest Crab Grass Rhizome, pulled from and identified as coming from St. Mary Magdalen grounds, will receive a monetary prize of undetermined value! Now can you beat that?

Won't YOU accept this challenge from ME?
Joanie Montforton

THE INTERCESSIONS While the Eucharistic Prayer is primarily a prayer of thanksgiving, it also includes prayers of petition or intercession. This is very similar to the Jewish blessing prayers which were the pattern of our Eucharistic Prayer. These petitions ask that the power of Christ's saving act become effective in the lives of this assembly, the whole Church and ultimately the whole world. We call on the saints, our family in heaven, to join us in this prayer and lastly, we ask that all the faithful departed be raised up by the power of Christ's resurrection.

The Roman tradition had two sets of intercessions and invocations of the saints: one before and one after the consecration. The custom of the Church in Egypt (the Alexandrian tradition) was to place these before the consecration, and the tradition of the third great liturgical center, Antioch, was to place them after the consecration. In writing the eight new Eucharistic Prayers for our Roman Rite, the authors followed the tradition of Antioch and placed all intercessions and invocations in the last part of the prayer.
